Nanowrimo 2010
I'm Maureen & this is my NaNoWriMo blog! I'm doing NaNo for the first time this year so wish me luck! My current muse is "Running with the Fish". Follow me as I keep accountability with this blog, and babble about my story along the way. // synopsis / progress / about / ask / my blog //

Orlena?  Very close, anyway.  Long, white, koi-like tail with orange and black spots, long black hair?  Looks like Orlena to me.

Running with the Fish soundtrack
Ten songs that guided me through Nanowrimo 2010 and still echo the spirit of RWTF.  There’s a lot more tracks than this on my playlist (which is mostly mood) but here are the ten songs that sort of suit the story.  They’re in a specific order, of course.  If you choose to listen, please enjoy.

This is practically a scene right out of RWTF.

“Storm”  — Lifehouse

how long have I been in this storm,

so overwhelmed by the ocean’s shapeless form?
water’s getting harder to tread with these waves crashing over my head.

I know you didn’t bring me out here to drown,
so why am I ten feet under and upside down?
barely surviving has become my purpose
cause I’m so used to living underneath the surface.

if I could just see you, everything will be all right.
if I’d see you, the storminess will turn to light.
and I will walk on water and you will catch me if I fall.

and I will get lost into your eyes and know everything will be all right.

I have a coworker who has hands just like Miranda’s.

AMIYS is going better, btw.  I’ve been plugging away at it even though November’s over.  And I have a fantastic idea for 2012.  But I will finish RWTF.  Because while the story’s really meh, I love the characters.  This has been an update.

The last time I did one of these for RwtF was Thanksgiving 2010.  The story is over 75,000 words now.  I took out Miranda, Marietta and Jonah’s names to get a better visual of the most used words.
See Steph.  See Steph’s name get bigger as she becomes a player in the plot.  Whee!

Tiny excerpt and some musings.

Completely random excerpt because I can’t believe folks still read this blog!:

Jonah was sitting next to her. “You need to sleep,” he said.

She knew he was right. Her body was heavy. Her mind was heavy. Her heart, her eyelids… She sank into the bed, into the blankets, down into the water below the surface. She was sinking fast, going deeper and deeper into sleep. No, not sleep. Into the depths of the ocean. She was drowning. She couldn’t breathe. She was –

“Miranda?”

She startled awake. “Sorry, sorry,” she croaked. “I must’ve drifted off for a second.”

Spoiler: she was asleep for like an hour.  I was trying to write that sort of place where you’re drifting off into sleep and lose control of your thought process, but still think you’re in control of it.

As an aside, one of the reasons I’m itching to finish this thing is because I’m actually excited to edit it.  Most people dread this step but I’m really looking forward to tearing it apart.  Typing it all back up with corrections will suck, but the red-pen edit itself is going to be so much fun.  There’s a lot of half-developed concepts and themes, as well as characters that need fleshed out or just plain cut out (sorry, Megumi, but seriously you only had one line).

Also, it seems when I write, I’m in either plot mode or character mode.  In the past week I’ve blown through a bit over 7500 words.  And it’s all been the climax (if you can call it that).  Plot plot plotty plot.  But I don’t “feel” Miranda at all.  I know how to move her correctly, the right things for her to think and say, but I’m out of touch with her in the way that you’re in your characters’ skins.  Boo.  I’m hoping it doesn’t show when you read it.

I want to do more illustrative sketches like these but the drawing bug has been eluding me for months now.  I love those sketches.  They’re the perfect style for how I’d want to illustrate this story.

Anyway, I am at a point where the climax is mostly over and I need to introduce the (somewhat mild) twist that I’ve kept a secret from everyone.  Having trouble threading it together, not sure how it should all come to be.  So I’m very likely done churning out progress on RwtF until at least after Nanowrimo (unless I get a fit of inspiration while procrastinating on AMIYS).  I’m satisfied with the work I’ve done on it this week, though.

Dammit, now I have to get to the next plot point.

Welp, guess I’m not writing anything in RwtF for another few months!

I do just fine until the story actually needs to move forward to the next major plot point.  I don’t have any adhesive to put all these parts together.  So I just chew on bubble gum all day long and use it to try and stick them to each other and it kinda works for a little bit but then it starts to smell weird and fall apart.

What I’m trying to say is that I hate writing lengthy things.

Bullshitting mermaid physiology will be the death of me.

I kind of crack!ship Jonah and Marietta because I’m a horrible fucking person.
